tootbrute . @elias,

I'm kinda surprised how popular that linux tech tips guys is. He's the same as the other youtube influencers and their clickbait titles but he talks about computers.

I guess I don't really understand youtube "celebrities" because i never watch youtube. Only use it for teaching or to listen to music through an app like ViMusic

I honestly don't get it, either, but the only YouTube celeb I remotely "get" is MKBHD, and not so much because I give a rip about consumer tech anymore, but because he's very well-spoken and the videos are of very high quality.

Oh, also Mr. Mobile, for the same reason.

@elias Linus Tech Tips used to be really good during his golden age from 2013-2018. Then they started becoming too popular and were filled with sponsors and clickbait.

But they got people into building PCs, and for me, even into installing Linux!

So should deserve credit for how they got the masses, especially a whole generation of YouTube viewers, into PC gaming. But other channels would fill in the gaps that LTT didn't do anymore. Whether you like modern LTT is up to you.

Feels weird, as I've discovered LTT through a post on Void Linux Twitter, I was like "Wow, there is a guy named Linus and they are not talking about Linus Torvalds", I didn't know it was a popular channel.
Then again, I think I found out who PewDiePie is via a GOG.com blog entry.
This must be how old people feel when some celebrity is mentioned and they don't even know that name. I don't have anything against, but I just don't get sucked in. I sometimes fall down the Wikipedia rabbit hole, but it doesn't work that way with YouTube, even if video is interesting, I get bored or distracted very soon β€” video isn't my medium after all.
When I meet friends for beers, and they are "Have you seen what x did?", the "Who the f x is?" moment happens quite often, thanks to YouTube celebrities πŸ˜‚

This makes me thing about how negative PR is still PR, I know about a lot of people just because they did something stupid and it got attention. Well, I knew who Elon Musk was, but probably not that much. J.K.Rowling β€” I definitely knew about Harry Potter books, I think I've watched one of the movies, but she mostly stayed under my radar, it was trans community who made her a celebrity.

tootbrute . @elias,

Maybe most youtubers just piss me off by making a video for what could be a 2 paragraph blog posy

@elias Some make a video when a link or a screenshot would be enough :marseylaughwith: "Here, we download this thing, you can find the link in video description, we install it β€” voila!"
I think they do it because some people unironically use YouTube as their search engine, so such videos really get the views.
